4.2 System Update Kills Wiis
If you haven’t updated your Wii yet, you probably shouldn’t. Nintendo Wii’s 4.2 sytem update is proving to be nothing but trouble, from updates freezing, to completely bricked consoles. Users may see an error saying their Wii has been modified followed by the Wii failing to start. But, the error message is nondiscriminate, having been reported by modded Wii owners, and ones that have never been modded and some right out of the box. Others are reporting random disk read errors following the update.
It’s been suggested that the issues are caused by an update to the system’s bootloader, as reported to Kotaku. The user who posted this suggestion was, however, banned shortly after.
Nintendo posted that non-modded Wii owners with bricked units can send them in for a free repair. According the website:
Some of you have reported problems with your Wii console after updating to the Wii System Menu 4.2. The symptoms most people are describing usually occur when the Wii has been modified. However, some of you also mention your system has never been modified.
