“Game Changer: Why PC Plugins Are Considered ‘Cheating’ and Banned from Competition”

Today, the online character shooter Marvel Rivals released a significant mid-season update, introducing two new characters, a new map, and various balance adjustments. However, the game’s developer, NetEase, has issued a warning to PC players regarding the use of a popular software tool, which they believe constitutes cheating.

Warning Against Third-Party Software

On February 21, just days after NetEase laid off members of the American development team for Marvel Rivals, the company addressed players via its official website. They highlighted concerns about a third-party overlay plugin called Blitz, which reportedly provides PC gamers with extra insights that are typically unavailable during regular gameplay. Such plugins are common in titles like League of Legends, but they spark controversy over perceived advantages in competitive games, including Fortnite and Marvel Rivals.

NetEase explicitly stated, “Recently, we’ve seen the use of a third-party plugin known as Blitz. This program injects itself into our game process, giving users confidential information like damage and healing statistics. It allows players to selectively ban heroes, predict opponents’ ultimate abilities, and more, severely undermining the fairness of our game.”

The developer further declared that Blitz would no longer be permitted during gameplay, labeling it as cheating software. They assured players who had recently used Blitz that there would be no penalties, provided they cease its use in future matches. This serves as a cautionary note from NetEase, who stressed the importance of maintaining fairness in their gaming community and advised against using any third-party add-ons or overlays.

Blitz’s Response

In light of NetEase’s announcement, the team behind Blitz has communicated that they have “temporarily” suspended all overlays associated with Marvel Rivals while they explore alternative solutions to enhance their offering. They aim to return with improved features in the future.
