George R.R. Martin has once again broached the topic of a potential Elden Ring film. The acclaimed author initially hinted at a live-action adaptation a few months prior and expanded on this notion during IGN Fan Fest 2025. However, he indicated that his participation might be limited, primarily due to his ongoing commitment to finishing his next book.
Martin’s Involvement and Current Projects
Martin stated, “Well, I can’t say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring. We’ll see if the Elden Ring movie comes to pass and the extent of my involvement; I don’t know. I’m a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do.” The book he referenced is The Winds of Winter, the sixth installment of A Song of Ice and Fire, which he has been developing since 2010. His work on Elden Ring primarily involved worldbuilding, suggesting that any future movie adaptation may rely on him for basic consulting rather than a leading role.
Insights from FromSoftware
As anticipation builds for the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director at FromSoftware, shared his thoughts regarding the feasibility of an Elden Ring film in an interview with The Guardian. He emphasized that the studio lacks the expertise necessary for such adaptations and would need a reputable partner for the project. Notably, Sony has recently become the largest stakeholder in Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware, which might position them as a suitable collaborator given their extensive history in adapting gaming franchises.
Challenges in Adapting Elden Ring
While the game’s immersive atmosphere and compelling gameplay resonate with players, the narrative structure may pose challenges for film adaptation. If the project proceeds, it will be intriguing to see how filmmakers choose to translate the game’s story to a cinematic format.
