Reviving Nostalgia: Speed Devils Races Back Online with Dreamcast Live!

Dreamcast Live has successfully revived online multiplayer for the classic racing game, Speed Devils: Online Racing (2000). This revival allows players to experience the game with its original online functionality, thanks to the collaboration between Dreamcast Live, Shuouma, and Flyinghead.

Overview of Speed Devils: Online Racing

Speed Devils: Online Racing, developed by UbiSoft, stands apart from its predecessor, Speed Devils (1999), by focusing heavily on online multiplayer capabilities. Despite being a lesser-known title, it offers offline single-player races as well. The game utilized server code from other UbiSoft racing titles, such as POD Speedzone (2000) and Monaco Grand Prix Online (2001), which had previously been restored by Dreamcast Live.

Restoration Efforts

The task of bringing Speed Devils: Online Racing back online was undertaken by Shuouma, who encountered considerable challenges during the process. After eight years of dedicated work, he partnered with Flyinghead, and together they succeeded in restoring the game’s servers. Additional information about their process can be found in a blog post on Dreamcast Live.

Connecting to the Game

To play Speed Devils Online, players need a DreamPi connected to the Dreamcast’s modem. While the game does not support the Broadband Adaptor, well-documented guides on setting up Dreamcast Live are available for newcomers.

Community Engagement

Both Shuouma and Flyinghead are notable figures within the Dreamcast Live community, having restored various games to online status. Players who have a history with Speed Devils: Online Racing or those new to Dreamcast Live are encouraged to share their experiences in the comments.
