Encountering Ygwulf in Avowed: A Game-Changing Decision
In the immersive world of Avowed, players will meet the character Ygwulf during the main quest titled “An Untimely End.” This encounter unfolds following an unexpected demise in Paradis’ Administration District at the conclusion of the quest “Message from Afar.”
Navigating the Quest: Objectives to Track Down Ygwulf
Before finally confronting Ygwulf, players will need to achieve several objectives. The first step is visiting the Watcher to gather information. Following this briefing, players will report to the Ambassador, who will direct them toward Marius, a newly joined companion found at a nearby establishment.
Investigation progresses through examining the scene of your demise and scaling a nearby tower. This leads to a confrontation with Thalla the Taskmaster and, subsequently, information from an apothecarist that guides players to further explorations of the Claviger’s Estate and the Temple of Ondra.
Strategies for Investigating Ygwulf
Begin your hunt at the Claviger’s Estate, where valuable information awaits that can alleviate excessive backtracking. Afterward, proceed to the Temple of Ondra, where you can engage in dialogue with Elowe to access a secret hideout in the cistern below.
Your journey won’t be without challenges, as encounters with Paradisan Rebels and formidable crawlers will test your combat skills. Ultimately, you will engage in conversation with Ygwulf and be faced with a critical choice.
The Dilemma: Spare or Execute Ygwulf?
Your interactions with Ygwulf have significant implications. Depending on your choice, outcomes will differ, affecting both the narrative and your relationship with the remaining Paradisan Rebels.
Three main options are available when determining Ygwulf’s fate. The choice mainly comes down to forgiving him for a less confrontational result or killing him for better loot.
Option One: Forgiveness
If you choose to listen to Ygwulf without aggression, you may eventually elect to let him go. To do so, you must select the prompt to “take your people and leave.” Rewards for this decision include adra, 625 coins, and Ygwulf’s Key, facilitating an escape from the cistern.
However, this choice may not be well received by Ambassador Hylgard, unless you opt to deceive him, and may strain your relationship with Inquisitor Lodwyn. Upon leaving, you’ll meet Paradisan Rebel Stecg, who will provide a Writ of Passage, ensuring safety from Rebel attacks.
Option Two: Convince Him to Surrender
Alternatively, you can persuade Ygwulf to surrender. While Marius cautions that the Steel Garote may treat him harshly, you can assure Ygwulf of a fair trial. This path allows you to receive Ygwulf’s Key without a fight, but expect hostility from Paradisan Rebels afterward.
In this scenario, you’ll earn 1,500 coins upon returning to the Embassy, with Inquisitor Lodwyn showing marginally friendlier behavior. However, this route will also lead to the Dissident’s Warning from Stecg, meaning rebels will remain hostile toward you.
Option Three: Eliminate Ygwulf
Should you decide to forego conversation and confront Ygwulf directly, be prepared to battle him and the nearby rebels. Defeating Ygwulf grants you Ygwulf’s Key, his renowned Blackwing Armor, along with 48 gold and a health potion.
The aftermath is largely similar to the other choices. After collecting your rewards from the Ambassador, you will be met with the same outcome from Inquisitor Lodwyn, and the Paradisan Rebel Stecg will still grant the Dissident’s Warning.
