Donald Trump’s recently announced tariffs will have significant ramifications for various sectors worldwide, including the video game industry. A key concern for gamers is the potential increase in the price of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, which is already set at a premium.
Nintendo Switch 2 Pricing Details
Nintendo unveiled its new console during a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, confirming a retail price of $449.99 USD for the standalone console. A bundle, which features the newly announced Mario Kart World, is priced at $499.99 USD.
Manufacturing Adjustments
In 2019, Nintendo began shifting some of its production from China to Vietnam and Cambodia. Although there was speculation that this move aimed to sidestep tariffs during trade tensions between the U.S. and China, Nintendo clarified that was not the primary motivation.
Impact of New Tariffs
The tariffs announced by Trump include a substantial 46% tax on imports from Vietnam and a 49% tax on those from Cambodia. These tariffs were revealed shortly after Nintendo’s presentation and could substantially affect the global pricing of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Base Tariffs and Their Implications
A new base tariff of 10% on all imports to the United States will take effect on April 5, 2025. The higher tariffs for Vietnam and Cambodia will be implemented on April 9, 2025, and these will be in addition to the base tariff.
Unless negotiations yield a lower tariff or exemptions for specific exports to the U.S., the cost of the Nintendo Switch 2 may rise further, compounding the existing pricing challenges for consumers. The gaming community is closely monitoring these developments as the release date approaches.
